What do you stand for?

Who will you stand with, stand by, and stand for?

Most of us have different activities, duties and obligations we are trying to balance. There are work demands, concerns over one’s personal economic situation, or family and friends who need time and attention. Externally it can feel as if change
and chaos are all around us.

Keeping all those balls in the air is a juggling act that can leave one feeling stretched to capacity. With all the turbulence in our world and our lives, it’s easy to
understand how one might become overwhelmed. But then what? Do you engage or disengage at this point? While tempting to withdraw and resign oneself to the
idea that one person alone can’t facilitate positive and lasting change, what
the world needs now are people who will be courageous, take a stand, and speak
up.

In so many ways, people have taken small stands that have yielded tremendous change and positive results. Surely Rosa Parks did not know in 1955 when she refused to give her bus seat up to a white male passenger that she would one day be recognized as the mother of the modern day civil rights movement. She simply wanted to sit after a long day’s work. And yet her simple act of taking a stand for herself changed the course of history in the United States.

What would it take for you to take a risk? To take a
stand?

A first step would be to consider what you already know. What do you know – right now – that you stand for? There are no “right” answers to this question, only individual truths. For example, I know that I am willing to stand for others who want to achieve their life’s dreams and don’t know where to start. I will stand for freedom and equality for all people, and each person’s right to disagree in open
discussion. Because of my willingness to stand for these things, I am active in
organizations including ShiFT, The Purpose Project, and the United Way.

Ask Yourself These Three Questions:

1) What or who am I willing to take a risk on? (The answer might be yourself!)

2) When am I going to take a stand for what’s important to me? (Inaction assures more of the same…whereas action – any action no matter how small – defeats fear and procrastination).

3) What can I start doing right now to take a stand and express my voice? (Even a small action makes a difference and sets you on the path to taking a stand)

Be bold, meet the challenge, and take a stand!
